1 Collaborative Computing
2 What is it?
An interactive multimedia conferencing application that enables multiple parties to collaborate on textual and graphic documents. Through special software, each party can contribute to such documents, working together with the other parties.
Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary Copyright © 2008 by Wiley Publishing, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana.
3 What is it?
Collaborative computing is a fertile melange of technologies and techniques which facilitate people working together via computer- assisted means.
Wayne Robbins & Schahram Dustdar. Collaborative Computing - Area Overview - Media and Collaboration. Retreived September 13th, 2009, from Jrank

4 Thesis
Collaborative computing will simplify tasks done at home, and at work, while improving productivity, and emphasizing collaboration.
5 Real-world Examples:
Google Apps (Click Here)
- Allows users to share documents, spreadsheets, wikis etc with eachother and modify files to collaborate on a project
Apple’s iWork.com (Click Here)
- Allows users to submit files and have them reviewed and commented on by those who the user chooses to invite to review the document.
Wikipedia
World Community Grid (Click Here)
- A grid computing system that allows not-for profit research foundations access a huge computing grid system of 700,000+ personal computing systems to have large projects and research files calculated to save the not-for profit from purchasing a huge computing system to complete this normally expensive task.
G.ho.st OS (Click Here)
- An online operating system that allows users to share files among other GHOST OS users
- Allows for all documents and files to be hosted on a cloud computing server infrastructure provided by Amazon's EC2 Cloud Computing Servers
6. Benefits
Increased productivity - Virtually no downtime, no virus worries, no re-learning software, all applications within same program.
Real time collaboration - Allows for a virtually instantaneous review and response, no meetings or phone calls requires
Benefit of the collective’s knowledge - Two heads are better than one. Allows people to specialize
7 Issues
Tainted information(Colbert Report: Wikiality)
Privacy Issues
- All files saved on servers with other peoples data
- Corporations would be uploading sensitive confidential files
Reliability
- Googles server downtime on May 14th caused all its sites to be down for a huge portion of the world. Gmail, Google Apps, Youtube, Google search, and Blogger were all down!
- Google's gmail and google apps programs had a 100minute downtime on September 1st causing several people to be unable to access their e-mail and files through the web interface.
8 Conclusion:
The future
Already implemented
Already a strong presence
Still some issues

What is Collaborative Computing?
Consists of pooling together information.
Also working together and giving input to a single project.
Thesis
How Wiki's and collaborative computing is and could be used for educational purposes.
http://apco2p60.wetpaint.com
This website shows the ease of creating a Wiki and the process of editing and saving.
The page shows who has edited the page and when the page was edited to show what the page looked like and how it has changed.
The certain website provides privacy settings that allow the creator of the Wiki to choose who is able to edit the page. This could be any user, those who are a registered user, or those who have been invited to edit the content.
Conclusion:
For the future this type of technology will be used more frequently to complete school assignments that require many people to communicate with one another. Because of the simplicity of editing content, not having to worry about a million emails, and not needing a usb to transfer information will cut down the amount of time needed to spend on the project.
